Promise You Darling

Remember when we used to live in a damp bedsit in Manchester
Putting our last 50 pence into the gas meter
Just to buy us half an hour in front of the heater

And use the frigid bathroom down the hall
With mushrooms growing out from the wall

I promise you darling it’ll be alright
I promise you my darling it’ll be okay
I promise you darling it’ll be just fine
Things won’t always be this way

Remember that tiny trailer in the middle of an empty field
Cooking on an open fire even in the snow
Rice with some comfrey that we foraged by the road

Then on day we could see the sun
Casting its warmth on everyone

I promise you darling it’ll be alright
I promise you my darling it’ll be okay
I promise you darling it’ll be just fine
Things won’t always be this way

Remember how we would tend our beloved garden
Delighting in the fruits and flowers of our little Eden
Still you worried that one day I might be leaving

And sure enough one day I got the call
Been told to go and fight in the war

I promise you darling it’ll be alright
I promise you my darling it’ll be okay
I promise you darling it’ll be just fine
Things won’t always be this way

Even as I’m called away
I promise you darling it’ll be okay
Even when I’m nowhere near
Dry your eyes do not fear
